However, it is not unusual to experience some blurred vision during the first few days after surgery. Fortunately, this is usually a normal part of the recovery process.<\/p><p>In this article, we explain why your vision may temporarily be blurred, how long this usually lasts and when it is advisable to contact your ophthalmologist.<\/p><h2>Is blurred vision after cataract surgery normal?<\/h2><p>Yes. After cataract surgery, your eye needs time to heal and adjust to the new intraocular lens. As a result, your vision may still be slightly cloudy or fluctuate during the first few hours or days.<\/p><p>For many patients, vision already improves within the first two to three days. However, it can take several weeks for the eye to heal completely and for your vision to fully stabilise.<\/p><h2>How long does blurred vision last?<\/h2><p>Recovery is different for everyone. How quickly your vision improves depends on several factors, including how your eye heals, any pre-existing eye conditions and the treatment itself.<\/p><p>In general:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>The first 24 to 72 hours:<\/strong> mild blurred vision is very common.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>After 2 to 4 weeks:<\/strong> vision usually becomes increasingly stable.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>After 6 to 8 weeks:<\/strong> most patients have reached their final visual outcome.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Does your vision remain blurred after this period, or do you notice that it is getting worse again? Contact your ophthalmologist.<\/p><h2>Possible causes of blurred vision<\/h2><p><strong>The eye is still healing:<\/strong> after surgery, there may still be some mild swelling or inflammation. This is one of the reasons why you will usually be prescribed eye drops to support the healing process.<\/p><p><strong>Dry eyes:<\/strong> your eyes may temporarily feel drier after cataract surgery. This can cause fluctuating or blurred vision. Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can often provide relief.<\/p><p><strong>Posterior capsule opacification:<\/strong> over time, the lens capsule that holds the artificial lens in place can become cloudy. This is known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO), sometimes referred to as a secondary cataract. It may feel as though the cataract has returned, but this is not the case. PCO can usually be treated easily and painlessly with a YAG laser procedure.<\/p><p><strong>Adjusting your glasses prescription:<\/strong> your final glasses prescription can only be determined once the eye has fully healed. It is therefore possible that you may need an adjusted prescription after the recovery period to achieve optimal vision.<\/p><p><strong>Other eye conditions:<\/strong> eye conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration or other retinal problems may cause recovery to take longer or may limit the final improvement in vision.<\/p><h2>When should you contact your ophthalmologist?<\/h2><p>Although blurred vision is usually a normal part of the recovery process, there are certain symptoms that should not be ignored:<\/p><ul><li><p>A sudden deterioration in vision<\/p><\/li><li><p>Severe eye pain<\/p><\/li><li><p>Increasing redness of the eye<\/p><\/li><li><p>Flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters or a dark shadow in your field of vision<\/p><\/li><li><p>Blurred vision that does not improve after several weeks or starts to worsen again<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Do you have any questions about cataract surgery?
