Driving after cataract surgery is easier to plan when you understand what actually changes in the eye. Once you know why vision is hazy in the first hours and how the eye adapts to an artificial lens, it becomes obvious why one patient is driving again the next day while another sensibly waits a week. At Brussels Eye Doctors in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre we therefore explain it in three parts: what happens, what it means for your ability to drive, and what the timeline looks like in practice.<\/span><\/p>

What happens in the eye during and after the procedure?<\/b><\/h2>

In cataract surgery, the clouded natural lens is removed and replaced by a clear intraocular lens. To make this comfortable, you receive a local anaesthetic together with drops that dilate the pupil widely. A dilated pupil lets in far more light than usual and temporarily makes focusing impossible.<\/span><\/p>

After the operation the cornea is slightly swollen and the eye responds with a mild inflammatory reaction, which the prescribed drops keep under control. The combination of a dilated pupil, swelling and adjustment to a lens of different power explains why vision is misty and variable for the first hours to days.<\/span><\/p>

Why your brain needs time<\/b><\/h2>

The natural lens filters part of the incoming light and yellows over the years, which is why people with cataracts see a dimmed, yellowish world. An artificial lens suddenly transmits bright, blue-rich light again. Your visual system has to adapt to this new input, which shows itself as light sensitivity and sometimes halos around light sources.<\/span><\/p>

If only one eye has been treated, the brain is also processing two very different images: one sharp and bright, the other still cloudy. This can temporarily disturb depth perception and distance judgement, precisely the skills you rely on behind the wheel.<\/span><\/p>

What does this mean in practice for driving after cataract surgery?<\/b><\/h2>

The first consequence is straightforward: on the day of the procedure you do not drive. With a dilated pupil, blurred vision and usually a protective shield, you cannot assess traffic situations reliably. Arrange transport to and from our practice on Boulevard Saint-Michel.<\/span><\/p>

The second consequence is that your return to the wheel depends on measurable criteria rather than a fixed number of days. Your visual acuity must satisfy the Belgian legal standard for fitness to drive: for group 1 (a standard licence), at least 5\/10 (0.5) with both eyes together, correction allowed, and a horizontal visual field of at least 120\u00b0. The ophthalmologist checks these values at your post-operative review.<\/span><\/p>

The legal side: your responsibility<\/b><\/h2>

In Belgium you are not automatically tested after eye surgery. As a driver, you are personally obliged to meet the minimum fitness standards at all times. When an eye condition such as an advanced cataract could affect fitness to drive, the ophthalmologist assesses this and a fitness-to-drive certificate may be needed. In case of doubt, CARA (the centre for driving fitness and vehicle adaptation, part of Vias) issues a binding decision.<\/span><\/p>

You also have a duty to inform your insurer when your eyesight affects your fitness to drive. Driving while your vision falls below the standard not only endangers your safety but may also have consequences for your insurance cover in the event of an accident.<\/span><\/p>
